Description

Crown Prince Oscar of Sweden (1799-1859), King of Sweden and Norway 1844-1859, facing right in blue coat with gold-embroidered blue collar and epaulettes, white shirt, wearing the blue moir‚ sash of the Royal Swedish Order of the Seraphim, the cross of the Royal Swedish Order of Charles XIII, and the badges of the Royal Swedish Orders of the Sword and the Polar Star signed and dated 'Way. 1822' (lower right) oval, 13/4 in. (45 mm.) high, gilt-metal mount EXHIBITION Hanover, Kestner-Gesellschaft, Bildnisminiaturen aus nieders„chsischem Privatbesitz, 1918, no. 851 (artist unidentified, lent by Dr. Leo Catzenstein, Hanover). NOTES Oscar, the only son of King Charles XIV Johan (see lots 65 and 181) and Queen Desideria, succeeded his father in 1844. A liberal by temperament, he sought to conciliate nationalist feelings in Norway, encouraged social and economic reforms, developed schools, railways, banks and industry, and pursued a policy of Scandinavian unity and Swedish neutrality. He married Josephine of Leuchtenberg, a granddaughter of Empress Josephine of France.
