Description

A river landscape with figures by a ruined temple signed and dated 'JO Harms 1674' and inscribed 'IN HONOREM. D.S.A.C.' pen and brown ink, grey wash, brown ink framing lines 10 x 161/4 in. (253 x 412 mm.) PROVENANCE An unidentified collector's mark. with L'art Ancien, 1956. NOTES Drawn shortly after his return from Italy, this drawing is closely related to Harms' series of nine etchings of Antique ruins and buildings (Holl. 3-11), which are dated 1673. The remainder of Harms' career was spent as a theatre designer in Dresden and Hamburg.
