Description

Ansichten von Madeira. Dusseldorf: Arnz & Comp., [c.1854]. Portfolio containing tinted lithographic title, 10 tinted and hand-coloured lithographic views by Arnz & Company after Eckersberg, all trimmed and mounted on card as issued (660 x 518mm), with printed dedication to Josephine, Queen of Norway and Sweden, list of subscribers and 11 sheets of descriptive text by James Yate Johnson, to accompany each plate, in English and German. (Heavy spotting throughout, but hardly affecting images). Housed in portfolio with paper-covered boards and ties, printed title laid down on upper cover. A series of beautiful views of Madeira by Eckersberg. Known for his highly-accomplished paintings of his native Norway, Eckersberg had studied landscape painting in Christiania and Dusseldorf, spending two years in Madeira in 1852 for health reasons. The list of mainly royal subscribers shows that 8 copies of this work were destined for the King and Queen of Norway, 12 for the King and Queen of Portugal and 6 for the Empress Dowager of Brazil. Not in Abbey.
