Notes

Joe Fafard was born in 1942 in the French and Métis community of Ste. Marthe, Saskatchewan. Raised on a farm in a family with an artistic heritage -- his mother was a folk artist and a descendant of a Quebec wood carver -- Fafard was encouraged in his artistic pursuits, and completed a BFA at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg (1966) and an MFA at Pennsylvania State University (1968). Fafard taught at the University of Saskatchewan (Regina Campus) from 1968 to 1974 and was a visiting lecturer at the University of California at Davis from 1980 to 1981. His interactions with California ceramicist David Gilhooly encouraged him to explore his own experiences as a source of inspiration. Fafard then began creating figurative sculptures of his colleagues, as well as the sculptures of cows that would become iconic throughout his career. His work during these teaching years was widely praised, and in 1973, he was chosen, along with five other artists, to represent Canada in Canada Trajectoires ’73 at the Musée d’art moderne de la Ville de Paris. Fafard's clay and bronze sculptures of individuals ranging from artists (Pablo Picasso, Saskatchewan-based Jan Wyers), to politicians (Tommy Douglas, Sir John A. Macdonald), to First Nations leaders (Big Bear) have been exhibited across Canada and in New York, Brussels, Belgium, and England. He received many large commissions for his work, including 1985's The Pasture, featuring seven bronze cows—a work commissioned by Cadillac Fairview for the Toronto-Dominion Centre. Demand for Fafard's large-scale cows, bulls, and horses was high enough that Fafard eventually opened his own bronze foundry in Pense, Saskatchewan. Fafard's work is represented in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, Art Gallery of Ontario, Art Gallery of Hamilton, Edmonton Art Gallery, Montreal Museum of Fine Art, Vancouver Art Gallery, and the Winnipeg Art Gallery, as well as in other public and private collections. Fafard has received the Order of Canada (1981), the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Award (1987), the Saskatchewan Order of Merit (2002), le Prix Montfort (2003), and the Lieutenant Governor's Saskatchewan Centennial Medal for the Arts (2005). In 1973, he was the subject of the National Film Board documentary I Don’t Have to Work That Big. Joe Fafard died in March 2019, in Lumsden, Saskatchewan at age 76.

Terms

1. The closing of lots is staggered, with each subsequent lot closing one minute after the previous lot. If a bid is placed within the final moments of bidding for a particular lot, the bidding for that lot only will be extended for 3 minutes to allow for counter bids.

2. The total purchase price of each lot shall include the successful hammer price of the lot together with a buyer's premium of 18% of the hammer price. All prices are in Canadian Dollars.

3. A Goods and Services Tax of 5% will be charged on the hammer price and buyer's premium on all lots shipped to Canadian Provinces other than Saskatchewan. A Goods and Services Tax (GST) of 5% and a Provincial Sales Tax (PST) of 6% will be added to the successful hammer price and buyer's premium for all lots purchased by Saskatchewan residents or for delivery within Saskatchewan. 4. Although Saskatchewan Network for Art Collecting takes great care and diligence in cataloging of lots offered for auction, all property is sold "as is" and neither we nor our consignors or agents make any warranties or representations as to the correctness of the catalogue entry or other descriptions contained therein, of the physical conditions, size, authenticity, or quality.

5. Notwithstanding the preceding condition, if the purchaser can provide, within 28 days of the sale of any lot, written opinion from at least two acknowledged experts or authorities that the said lot was incorrectly described in the catalogue, and if the purchaser returns the said lot within 28 days after such notice in the same condition as sold, we as agent for the consignor will rescind the sale and refund the purchase price.

6. We reserve the right to withdraw any property up to the moment of sale.

7. If the auctioneers decide, irrespective of any publicized or catalogued estimate, that any opening bid is below the value of the lot offered, they may reject the bid and withdraw the lot from sale, and if, having acknowledged an opening bid, they decide that any advance thereafter is insufficient, they may reject the advance.

8. With the fall of the auctioneer's hammer, title to the lot being offered will pass to the highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer, subject to the conditions set forth herein. The successful bidder thereupon will pay the full purchase price and assume full risk and responsibility for the said lot. All property must be removed by the purchaser at his or her expense not later than sixty business days following its sale and if not so removed a handling charge of 2% of the purchase price per month will be payable by the purchaser until the property is removed.

9. Payment should be made in full within ten days following the sale by email transfer, cheque, cash, bank draft, PayPal, Visa, MasterCard, Bitcoin or Ethereum unless other arrangements have been made with the auctioneer prior to the sale. Payment via PayPal, Visa or Mastercard will be subject to a 3% surcharge on the invoice total, and Payment via Bitcoin or Ethereum will be subject to a 10% surcharge on the invoice total.
