Notes

The painting of Jia Juanli should be viewed as the manifestation
of a fortunate encounter between western painting and Chinese
sensitivity: a possible denouement for a history of Chinese
oil painting. It should easily be shown that western painting
has sought sources in calligraphy, as well as in many other
aspects of far eastern art, as a mean to refresh and invigorate
its own history. One should remember none the less that
many oriental painters have adopted western modernity as a
period in the culture. Not therefore as selective loans, but as
a search for a form that could convey their feelings about the
world. Therein lies a major difference between the western
attitude and the commitment of oriental painters. Without and the commitment of oriental painters. Without
doubt, it explains the capacity of Jia''s work to perform a profound,
fascinating transposition of the spirit of Chinese civilisation
into a plastic expression that is built on the canons of
classic oil paintings.
The dim light, the silence and the serene frontality that prevail
in her painting, expressed with the tools of our tradition, are
perhaps a reference to the power of emptiness and the immobility
of time that are typically Chinese. The artist''s explicit
invitation to dream in her portraits, interiors and gardens leads
us to grasp with these images the depth of an open and mysterious
meaning, just as we looked at our own images before
they became the transient signs of a soulless world, at the end
of the 20th century.
What appeared to be a paradox - a profoundly Chinese expression
created by means of a profoundly western art-turns out, in
our opinion, to be a rich and necessary coming together at a
particular moment in universal painting. Far from copying the
eastern cliches of abstract posturing or plagiarism of western
styles, Jia''s sober, intimate and structured work calmly imposes
its force and the evidence of an original and exacting vision.
