Item Overview

Description

8 x 10 inch gelatin silver print.

Straker founded the Visual Arts Club in post-war London’s Soho In 1951. It was devoted to the appreciation of the female body and against censorship. His photographs have an element of surrealist irony. The angle and lens give the large hand and bulging thighs a grotesque emphasis.

Straker’s embossed signature is on the bottom left. There is a stamp on the verso from “The Femina Library of the Academy of Visual Arts” that indicates this is his personal copy and has an identification number written in. The number is repeated in a separate stamp.
