Notes

Born in Paris, Jean-Louis Jaley was a pupil of his father, the medal engraver Louis Jaley, and of the sculptor Pierre Cartellier. Jaley entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris, in 1820 and won the Prix de Rome in 1827. His stay in Rome exposed him to antique sculpture and the paintings of Raphael, both of which influenced his style. On his return to Paris he contributed sculpture to the state building projects of the July Monarch (1830-48) and the Second Empire (1851-70). His graceful, Raphaelesque nudes were also celebrated and were regularly exhibited at the Salon.

A number of Jaley's sculptures are in the collection of the Louvre Museum, including his Prière of 1831, Pudeur of 1833 and his portrait of Prince Ferdinand-Philippe d'Orleans.
