Notes

Fontallard was destined for a military career but his passion for painting made him determined to become an artist. When still a Lieutenant, he visited the studios of Augustin and David. He first exhibited at the Salon in 1798, winning a 1st class medal in 1812 for the portrait of his son Henri. He exhibited miniatures and watercolour portraits at the Salon until 1835. Schidlof regards his earlier miniatures, such as the present lot, to be the finest of his career.
