Notes

Like his teachers Theodore Rousseau and Diaz de la Pena, Jean Emile Renie also specialised in depicting landscape views of the forest of Fontainebleau. He entered the Salon in 1867 with two landscape paintings, Chemin conduisant a une carriere abandonee, foret de Fontainebleau, and Apres l'orage, paysage. He travelled extensively in France, and visited Spain and Italy, where he produced many views of Venice. In 1883, he became a member of the Societe des Artistes Francais.
