Peacocks, doves, a deer, an eagle, a pheasant and a horse at a fountain: design for a frontispiece signed and dated 'J: d: La Chambre. 16831/8..' black and red chalk, pen and brown ink, grey and yellow-green wash, pen and brown ink framing lines 91/2 x 77/8 in. (242 x 200 mm.) PROVENANCE A. Sigwalt (L. 175). E. Rodrigues (L. 897). LITERATURE C. von Prybram-Gladona, Unbekannte Zeichnungen alter Meister aus europ„ischem Privatbesitz, Munich, 1969, no. 136, illustrated. NOTES Comparable drawings by La Chambre, in the same medium and also depicting wildfowl, are in the British Museum and the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin, M. Royalton-Kisch, 'Fowl play? From van Borssom to Quina and La Chambre', Master Drawings, 1998, 1, pp. 49-50, figs. 8-9 and no. 20. La Chambre, Master of the French School in St. Ursulasteeg in Haarlem, seems to have been influenced by Melchior d'Hondecoeter, but was probably taught by his father, a printmaker and schoolmaster.
