NOTE

Gassies, a member of the French navy, was captured and imprisoned by the English and it may have been after his release that he had the opportunity to explore England and Scotland. He was much taken by the English school of painters and returned several times, in 1821, 1824 and 1826, when he painted his Paysage d'Ecosse in Autun, Musée Rolin. He was a pupil of Jacques-Louis David and, after the 1822 salon, was decorated with the Legion d'honneur.
