This drawing is a preparatory study for Wicar's famous painting, Virgil reading the Aeneid to Augustus and Livia (1818; Villa Carlotta, Cadenabbia Tremezzo, Lake Como). Two copies of the picture, in the Collection Baldoni, Rome, and the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lille, are illustrated by Gordon and Aldega, op. cit., p. 94).
