Description

A wooded landscape with a blasted tree by a rock signed and dated 'Gibert... 21 Mai 183.' oil on paper 131/4 x 181/2 in. (337 x 470 mm.) NOTES Gibert was born in Pointe-…-Pitre in Guadeloupe and moved to Paris in 1821 to study with Guillon-LethiŠre, a fellow artist from the West Indies. From 1825 Gibert studied at the Ecole nationale sup‚rieure des Beaux-Arts and four years later won the Prix de Rome for historical landscapes. This sketch was executed by Gibert when he was in Rome at the Villa Medici. Gibert returned to France in 1834 and exhibited at the Salon until 1872. The landscape that won the artist the Prix de Rome is in the Ecole nationale sup‚rieure des Beaux-Arts (P. Grunchec, Le grand prix de peinture, Les concours des prix de Rome, 1797 … 1863, Paris, 1983, I, no. 154; II, pp. 101 and 107). A group of oil of paper studies by the artist was exhibited by Emmanuel Moatti in New York in October 2001.
