Description

A COLLECTION OF DRAFT DESIGNS, WORKING NOTES, SCRIPTS, AND PHOTOGRAPHS FROM EARLY COLLABORATIONS WITH THE FILM DIRECTOR KEN RUSSELL, COMPRISING:
i) Taverner: notebook, "The costumes for Taverner by Peter Maxwell Davies", detailed notes on staging and about 55 designs for costumes and sets in pen, ink, and pastel, some heightened in gold, with another four designs on white card loosely inserted, 40 pages, plus blanks, large 8vo (255 x 180mm.), half vellum on decorated board; 17 draft costume designs for the same production, pen and ink, on five leaves loosely inserted in a grey folder; mimeograph typescript of the libretto by Peter Maxwell-Davies, extensively annotated by Jarman and with a sketched designs, also signed by the author, 31 pages, dated Princeton, NJ, 7 November 1962, marbled boards
ii) The Devils: two draft typescript shooting scripts, the earlier with a sketch of a set on p.2, Russo Productions, 19 March and 6 April 1970; together with 19 amateur colour photographs of Jarman and his parents on the set, 10 photographs and 5 contact sheets with Ray Dean copyright labels, showing the set under construction, and 5 other photographs of the production
iii) Savage Messiah: 12 sketches by Paul Dufficey based on Gaudier-Brzaska sculptures with a note by Jarman, one page, folio; shooting script, Russ-Arts Limited, January 1972; press photographs and publicity material (12 items)
iv) Space Gospel: autograph draft screenplay, here entitled 'The Fifth Gospel', 173 pages, plus blanks; two complete typescript screenplays together with one fragment, in total 306 pages, a mixture of top copies, carbons, and photocopies, one typescript dated 20 September 1976
v) Other unrealised projects: 'Project for Ken Russell | Salome', a group of c.25 pen, ink, and pastel designs, 12 pages, each page signed, tracing paper, folio, 1977; bundle of notes and pen, ink, and pencil sketches relating to an unrealised project based on the life of the Pharaoh Akhenaten, 35 pages, plus blanks; two photographs of a maquette of a set, together with an overpainted photograph, relating to an unrealised project based on Gargantua and Pantagruel; also nine amateur colour photographs of Jarman's flat, early 1970s, and a single leaf with phone numbers (the collection housed in two boxes, one folder, and outsized photographs between cardboard covers)
