Description

Portrait of Tennessee territorial Governor William Blount (1749-1800), charcoal and chalk on paper by Jane Freeman (English/American, 1871-1963). Portrait is a copy of an engraving by an unknown artist and according to oral history was commissioned by the Blount family in the mid 20th century. Freeman studied in Paris with Olga de Boznanska, the noted Polish portrait painter, and at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere. Her subjects included Albert Schweitzer, Thomas Corwin the governor of Ohio, and Louise Hunter of the Metropolitan Opera. One of her watercolors won the prize given by the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors in 1928. Matted in a giltwood frame with plaque lower center: "Hon. William Blount/1744 (sic)-1800". Condition: discolored spot near subject's right ear, scattered foxing and toning to paper and mat, edge wear and losses to frame. Sight- 18 /12" H x 13 1/2" W, Framed 27" H x 21" W.
