Notes

Formerly given to Allaert van Everdingen, and so certificated by Dr. Walther Bernt. The attribution of this painting to Blanckerhoff was first made in a letter to the owner from the R.K.D. in October 1998, in which it is compared with another picture formerly thought to be by Van Everdingen, a Coastal Scene with Koetser in London in 1964, which bore a Dubbels signature, but which had been recognised years before by Hofstede de Groot as by Dubbels' pupil Blanckerhoff. The writer concluded that the present work was painted by Blanckerhoff while in the Dubbels studio, in the 1650s. Blanckerhoff's tones are generally cooler than those of Hendrick Dubbels, as can be seen here. Another comparabale work, also formerly attributed to van Everdingen, was sold New York, Sothebys, 17 June 1982, lot 140. It has been suggested that the village in the distance may be Schellingwoude.
