Notes

This is an autograph replica with studio assistance of Jan Massys' painting, dated 1557, from the collection of the Earl of Wemyss at Gosford House, now located in the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh (see L. Buijnsters-Smets, Jan Massys, Nijmegen 1995, pp. 186-7, cat. no. 30, reproduced). Infra-red reflectography of the present version has revealed pouncing marks and underdrawing with modifications, which implies the use of a cartoon to transfer the design within Massys's workshop.
