Jan Martszen de Jonge (Haarlem 1609-1647 Amsterdam (?)) Design for a title page: Ladies and gentlemen flanking a scene of the Annunciation on a stage inscribed 'MINNE popies' (in the cartouche), with inscription 'van de Venne' (mount) pen and brown ink, brown wash, indented for transfer and blackened on the verso, brown ink framing lines 2½ x 3½ in. (6.5 x 8.9 cm.); and two further drawings: a. Dutch School, early 17th Century, The Adoration of the Magi (pl. 13), and b. Swiss School, early 17th Century, A farmer with a plough drawn by two oxen (pl. 11) (3)

Provenance

Comte d'Argentré (according to an inscription on the verso); possibly Silvestre, Martin, George and Defer, Paris, 27-28 January 1839, lot number untraced (most drawings sold in poorly-described groups). with Nicolaas Beets (1878-1963), Amsterdam; from whom purchased by I.Q. van Regteren Altena on 28 May 1928 for 115.20 guilders (Inventory book: '460. t. A. v. d. Venne?? minnepopjes').

Notes

A preparatory drawing for the title page of the song and ballad book Minne-popiens, bestaende in verscheyde liedtiens ende minne-dighiens by J.H. Krul, published in Amsterdam by P.J. Slyp in 1639. An illustrated copy by Gesina ter Borch (1631-1690) of one of the popular poems from this book is in the large holdings of drawings by members of the ter Borch family in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (A. McNeil Kettering, Drawings from the Ter Borch studio estate, Amsterdam, 1988, II, pp. 426-427, illustrated p. 491, cat. no. Gs 61, folio 10).
