modelled in full round, the Prince wearing full armour and is decorated with the Order of the Golden Fleece, dated on the right arm 1759 and monogrammed on the left arm I.F.A., on a later wooden base

Jan Franciscus Allaert (1703-1779) lived in the city of Gent, Belgium. He was a well known ébéniste, ornemaniste and sculptor, and worked mainly in his city of birth. He was assigned by both church and royalty. One of his most important works is the statue of Emperor Charles-Quint at the Vrijdagmarkt in Gent.

During the reign of Prince Charles-Alexandre, gouverneur of the Austrian Netherlands, the bourgeoisie and rich merchants ordered small sculptures of the gouverneur. The terracotta bust on sale is an example of a such a sculpture.
