NOTE

A number of compositional studies by De Bray are known, but individual figure studies such as this are rare. A black chalk study of a young man, dated 1662, is in Leipzig (Museum der bildenden Künste, inv.nr. 403; see J.W. von Moltke, 'Jan de Bray', Marburger Jahrbuch für Kunstwissenschaft 11/12 (1938/39), no. Z 108).
