Notes

In addition to his many landscape drawings (such as lot 187), Jan de Bisschop also made numerous copies after sculptures and paintings by other artists.υ1 The copies after paintings are, like the present example, characterised by broad areas of heavy brown wash, creating highly dramatic chiaroscuro effects. In the present example, the visual impact is enhanced by the remarkable decorative mount, which is similar to those associated with drawings from the collection of the celebrated architect and antiquary, John Talman (1677-1726). The painting on which this drawing is based is in a Bolognese private collection; although De Bisschop thought it to be by Guercino, it is now attributed to his follower Lorenzo Gennari (fig. 1). υ2 1.
