Description

Portrait of Diederich Janssen Eyken Sluyters (1798-1841) in religious dress signed (scratched) and dated (scratched) 'J.A.Kruseman ft 1831.' (upper left) oil on canvas 82 x 66.5 cm. LITERATURE E.L. Lipke a.o., Jan Adam Kruseman 1804-1862, Exhibition catalogue Paleis het Loo, Apeldoorn, 2002, cat.no. 195. NOTES The sitter was born in Haarlem and studied in Amsterdam. In 1827 he left for Paramaribo, Surinam, where he worked as a clergyman until 1834. He married three times, becoming a widower twice in Surinam. Diederich Janssen Eyken Sluyters was also a member of the 'Kolonialen Raad'. He later returned to the Netherlands, where he died in Amsterdam in 1841. The present lot is recorded in the artist's notebook (see Ir J.G. Kram, Jan Adam Kruseman Jzn. en zijn catalogus van portretten, in: Jaarboek Amstelodamum, LII, 1960, p. 164, no. A.11).
