Maria, Marchioness of Ailesbury (1809-1895) was the second wife of Charles Bruce, 1st Marquess of Ailesbury.

James Rannie Swinton studied art in Edinburgh and at the Royal Academy schools in London. He travelled to Italy and in Rome established himself as a popular portrait painter, specialising in the portrayal of fashionable society ladies. On returning to London Swinton soon became one of the most sought after portrait painters of the day.
