A Summer Dream
Signed, inscribed, and dated "J.M. STONE BOSTON 1890" l.r., identified on a
label from the World's Columbian Exposition (now detached) and with a label from William Atherton, Boston, Massachusetts, on the back of the frame.
Oil on canvas, 44 x 34 in. (111.7 x 86.4 cm), framed.
Condition: Paint losses, abrasions u.l., craquelure, canvas deformations, surface grime.

N.B. In his narrative critique of the Columbian Exposition, Herbert Bancroft wrote, "Much admired are J.M. Stone's "Leukopis" and "A Summer Dream," ... Both figures are somewhat scantily draped, with flesh tints sufficiently pronounced, "A Summer Dream," representing a brown-haired maiden lost in reverie, and in reclining posture, with eyes half closed and slightly parted lips, one hand resting on her bosom and the other holding in her lap a cluster of roses."

Abrasion to u.l. quadrant measuring approx. 4 in. length, varnish inconsistencies throughout, abrasion to sitter's breast approx. 1/8 in. diameter, craquelure throughout, alligatoring to u.l. quadrant spanning approx. 3 x 6 in.
