Notes

Pendennis Castle was one of two forts built between 1540 and 1545, during the reign of Henry VIII, to defend the mouth of the River Fal, St Mawes on the east bank and Pendennis on the west. During the Civil War, Pendennis Castle was a Royalist stronghold, and gave sanctuary to both Queen Henrietta Maria and the future Charles II before their flight to France.

Philp was born in Falmouth and the majority of his exhibited works are of the Cornish and Devon coast. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1848 and 1853.
