James Boren (1921-1990), "Switzerland", 1984, watercolor, sight: 10 x 7", frame: 19 x 16"

A noted watercolor and oil painter of western scenes and member of the Cowboy Artists of America, James Boren was born in Waxahachie, Texas, the son of a minister, and from 1971, he lived in Clifton, Texas. Because of the influence of his father, he continued to regard himself as a religious person. He knew as a teenager that he wanted to be an illustrator but his schooling at Southwestern College was interrupted by four years of military service in the Marines during World War II. After the war in 1951, he earned his M.F.A. from the Kansas City Art Institute and then taught for two years at St. Mary's College. With his earnings, he traveled the Southwest and also painted in Alaska, and in 1956 moved to Denver where he worked as a concept illustrator for the Martin Company. In 1959, he began selling cowboy paintings, and in 1964, he became the first Art Director of the Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City. He loved that job because he met so many of the artists he admired. He first exhibited there in 1969, having become a full-time fine art painter the year before. At his first exhibit, he sold thirty-eight of the forty paintings, and this success gave him the confidence to remain a full-time painter. He was named Texas State Artist of the Year, and as a member of the Cowboy Artists of America, won the gold medal in watercolor seven times. His paintings consistently reflected his belief that the American cowboy had the star role in the drama of the West - the most beautiful country anywhere.

PICK-UPS:
The buyer must arrange for collection of a purchased lot within seven (7) days of the date of the auction. Vogt Auction will not release auction purchases until we have received payment in full (and until any checks have cleared the bank). If the buyer pays for their purchases but does not collect their items within thirty (30) days of the auction, the buyer will incur a storage fee of $5 per day. We will not release purchased lots to the buyer until all such charges have been paid in full. If a purchased lot is paid for but not picked up within 2 months the buyer authorizes Vogt Auction, upon notice, to arrange a resale of the item by auction or private sale, with estimates and a reserve set at Vogt Auction's reasonable discretion. The proceeds of such sale will be applied to pay for storage charges and any other outstanding costs and expenses owed by the buyer to Vogt Auction and the remainder will be forfeited unless collected by the buyer within 2 years of the original auction.

Auction purchases must be paid for within seven (7) days of the date of the sale. Invoices will be emailed to each buyer including a written description and hammer price of each purchase as well as any applicable buyer's premium and tax. Texas residents are charged at our local San Antonio sales tax rate unless we are provided a copy of a valid Texas state resale certificate. Out of state residents are generally not charged Texas sales tax.

NON-PAYMENT:
By Texas law a winning auction bidder automatically enters into a legal and binding purchase contract with the auction house. In the rare case when a successful bidder fails to pay for their purchases within the time period allowed Vogt Auction will pursue available legal steps to protect its interests and may block the bidder from future auction participation. Reasonable interest and storage fees may also be added to past due invoices.
