Notes

Bertrand studied at Lyon, then at Paris under Victor Orsel and Périn, spending 11 years decorating the walls of Notre Dame de Lorette. In 1857, the same year he began to show at the Salon, he left Paris for Italy where he remained for 5 years. The religious subjects he had painted began to change into historic, heroic and Romanesque allegories. Much of this change happened due to his friendship with the sculpters Falguière and Carpeaux.
