"These paintings from 1963, with their ghostly, looming monsters, are omens of the 'Accidental paintings' (1964) and 'Suicidal paintings' (1965) (see lot 22), shown at the Galerie Westing in Odense and Galerie Krikhaar in Amsterdam (and then in the Hengelo Kunstzaal), respectively. (....) Having bypassed Cobra, and once again proving what Constant said, these uninhibited paintings back away from anything that touches on aesthetics, to which the historic Cobra had become so attached back in the herbarium. One thing is certain: these paintings are about Life from beginning to end."
