Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane supported by two angels
with inscription 'L.d. Carracci' (recto) and 'Lud Carraci' on the mount
black chalk, pen and brown ink, brown wash heightened with white on blue paper, the corners cut
7 3/4 x 7 3/4 in. (196 x 196 mm.)

Notes

Comparable to a number of drawings by Bertoia such as nos. D15, D26, D29bis, D44, D93, figs. 227, 185, 109bis, 72, 64 of D. Degrazia, Bertoia, Mirola and the Farnese Court, Milan, 1991. A fresco of a related subject based on a design by Bertoia, executed around 1571, is in the Oratorio del Gonfalone, Rome (D. Degrazia, op. cit., no. P16, fig. 223, for the drawing fig. 224).
