Notes

The design for this sauce boat has been associated with a lost original by Salviati. Four other versions are known: in the Real Academia di San Fernando, Madrid (inv.149), attributed to Salviati, but in fact by an unknown later hand, sometimes associated with the Zuccari; in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (album Peiresc Aa 53); in the Royal Library, Windsor (inv 11324), as Florentine School reminiscent of Rosso; and in the Biblioteca Comunale, Palermo (vol. XXIII H38, no.106a) part of an album of ornamental drawings put together by Padre Sebastiano Resta (1635-1714) for which Catherine Monbeig Goguel suggested an attribution to Marco da Faenza. (1)
