Notes

Another version of this composition associated with the School of Salviati and dated to the mid-16th Century, was formerly in the Perman Collection, Stockholm. The drawing, bearing an annotation noting that the salt-cellar is in the form of a ship, was in a group of twenty-four goldsmiths' designs associated with the work of Salviati, which were purchased by Perman in Bologna between the wars and remained in Sweden until dispersed. (1) There is another version of this design, of inferior quality, in the Victoria and Albert Museum.

1. See J. F. Hayward, Virtuoso Goldsmiths, and the Triumph of Mannerism 1540-1620, London 1976, p. 346, illus. pl. 83
