Notes

PROVENANCE:
With Roland, Browse and Delbanco, 19, Cork Street, London (according to remnants of a label on the reverse).

EXHIBITED:
Ferens Art Gallery, Kingston upon Hull, Collectors' Choice, 1970, no. 103a. Lent by Mr. Francis Johnson.

Linthorst, born in Amsterdam, appears to have spent most of his artistic career in his native town. Little is known of his early training, although the influence of Jan van Os is clearly evident. His compositions are characterized by the tight profusion of overlapping flowers interspersed by fruit, and the current lot is a perfect example of his oeuvre.
