A shepherd with sheep, goats and a cow indistinctly signed and dated 'J V DER.... PINXIT(?) 1641' oil on canvas 161/2 x 21 5/8 in. (42 x 55 cm.) NOTES The artist, a pupil of Nicolaes Moeyaert, painted Italian landscapes with well-observed animals and herdsmen in the style of Adriaen van de Velde, of which the present work is a typical example. His works, which tend to be rich in tone, often coloured by an olive-brown shade, also frequently display the influence of his friend, Karel Dujardin, for example his Mountain landscape with cattle and herdsmen in the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum, Brunswick.
