Provenance

Han Jüngeling, The Hague, where bought by the present owner in 1967,
Then sold to Bert van Deun, Beerse, Belgium in 1990;
Bought back from Bert van Deun's estate in 2009.

Notes

A related composition on a small round panel (diameter 15.8 cm.), with the inclusion of two figures on a path, is in the Dordrechts Museum, Dordrecht (inv. no. 960/72), and has been dated by L.J. Bol to circa 1636.υ1 A similar date can be suggested for the present lot.

Letters to the present owner from Horst Gerson (dated 20 December 1967) and Egbert Haverkamp-Begemann (dated 3 January 1968) confirm the attribution to Van Geel.
