Item Overview

Description

AN EXTENSIVE ITALIANATE LANDSCAPE WITH A HUNTER, AND A DISTANT HILLTOP CASTLE

measurements note
155 by 282mm

bears signature in brown ink, lower left: Wyke
pen and brown ink

NOTE

This drawing was formerly attributed to Jan Wyck, but seems in fact to be characteristic of the style of Jacob Esselens. The drawings of these two Dutch expatriate artists who worked in England during the years following the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660 can be hard to separate, but the details of the penwork seen here are more comparable with drawings by Esselens, such as the fine view of Kleve, formerly in the Hermitage (sold, Leipzig, C.G. Boerner, 29 April 1931, lot 67).
