NOTE

The attribution of wooded landscapes such as this is often much debated, with the distinction between the works of Anthonie Waterloo and Simon de Vlieger often proving particularly contentious. A few drawings of this type seem, however, to have a subtly different character, with a somewhat tighter definition of the treetrunks in particular, and these are generally given to Jacob Esselens. An example, which is very similar in style to the present sheet, is in the Lugt Collection (see Dessins de Paysagistes Hollandais du XVIIe Siècle, exh. cat., Brussels/Rotterdam/Paris/Berne 1968-9, cat. no. 50, reproduced).
