Notes

PROPERTY OF A PRIVATE COLLECTOR
In the 1640s, Jacob de Villeers, a pupil of Rembrandt, developed his own distinct landscape style in which similar elements of a river plane set beneath mountains and an expansive sky frequently recur. As Werner Sumowski points out, the present landscape is closest in composition to Mountainous Landscape with Waterfalls, in the collection of Alfred Bader, Milwaukee (see Sumowski, Gemälde der Rembrandt-Schüler, vol. IV, Landau / Pfalz 1983 and after, p. 2923, no. 2929, reproduced). The present picture is also similar to another landscape in the Seattle Art Museum, and to another in the Boymans-van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam (Sumowski, IV, 2928 and 2922, respectively).
