American, 1820-1840, finely cast eagle head pommel and crosshatch carved bone grip, blade with gilt decoration over blue surface, guard with spread eagle, 36-1/4 in., brass scabbard, 32-1/2 in., guard loose (possibly lacking spacers), scabbard with dents and lacking throat element, dents Provenance: Edward J. C. Bullock and Sarah A. H. Babbitt-Bullock, The Babbitt-Bullock House, Providence, Rhode Island; by descent to consignor Major Jacob Babbitt (1809-1862), 7th Rhode Island Infantry, was commissioned an officer June 1862, and mortally wounded at the Battle of Fredericksburg, Maryland, December 23, 1862. He had served in the Rhode Island House of Representatives and founded the Commercial Bank of Bristol, Rhode Island.
