Jacco Olivier is primarily a painter dealing with painting by analyzing every step. He begins his work by depicting something in swift, light brushstrokes. He modifies and changes the picture and records each phase in photographs. His work is completed through computer techniques into 'moving pictures'. The resulting animation is simple and concise but demonstrates each step. His work process is considerably intricate, but in terms of themes, his attitude seems much more liberal. He rarely creates artworks under a specific theme and would not define the relations between each work. In terms of subject his work addresses common everyday scenes and objects, in terms of process he creates an impression of a fleeting moment by post-impressionistic brush marks and his use of diverse colours, which sometimes make his work appear abstract. Despite the rendition of unrealistic situations with common objects, his work is like the depiction of a dream-scene through this technique, so viewers can accept his painting naturally. He presents a new type of painting through the combination of painting and video.

Jacco Olivier was resident artist at the Rijksakademie in 1997-1998.
He won the Buning Brongers Prize (NL) in 1998.
