Description

Cottenham: Charlotte Maria, aged 8 1/2, holding an open book; Frances, aged 7 1/2, holding a flower; Charles Edward, aged 6 1/2, holding a top hat; and William John, aged 5, holding a cap cut-outs on card, all inscribed on the reverse with the sitter's names and dated Brighton 1830, Charles and Charlotte both with trade label no.2, maple wood frames with gilded inner borders rectangular, 166mm. (6 1/2in.) high (4) Footnote: Charles succeeded his father as 2nd Earl in 1851. On his death, without issue in 1863, he was succeeded by his younger brother, William, as 3rd Earl. The latter married in 1870, Theodosia, daughter of Sir Robert Dallas Bt. Their son Kenelm, succeeded his father as 4th Earl in 1881.
