Item Overview

Description

Issac Habrecht II (1589-1633) and Johann Christoph Weigel (1661-1726)
HABRECHT, Issac II (1589-1633) and Johann Christoph WEIGEL (1661-1726). Engraved gores for a pair of 20cm (8-inch) diameter globes. Nuremberg: J.C. Weigel, engraver, [c.1675-1700].A rare set of the Habrecht globe gores, originally issued in 1621/1625, but here re-engraved by Johann Christoph Weigel, a member of Weigel family of Nuremberg engravers and map sellers. Stevenson notes the extreme rarity of the Habrecht globes as originally published, and describes the terrestrial globe's interesting antecedents, tracing its lineage from Blaeu via Hondius, noting that the loxodromic lines 'are made a conspicuous feature of the map'; the prime meridian runs through the island of Corvo in the Azores. See Shirley World 314 and Stevenson II, 50-53.Two sets of 12 gores on 4 sheets, each globe printed using 4 plates of 3 gores each, together with 2 plain sheets of the meridian ring, horizon and compass cap for the two globes (each sheet 360 x 420 mm). The terrestrial uncoloured and numbered in arabic, the celestial gores with contemporary(?) hand-colouring and numbered in roman, the first plate of both globes signed 'Joh. Christoph Weigel excudit'.
