Notes

PROPERTY FROM A DUTCH PRIVATE COLLECTION
Like all of Van Nickelen's reliably dated works, this work is painted in the 1690sυ1, and shows the single vanishing point, with an exaggerated perspective, characteristic of Van Nickelen. Through this perspective, he was able to intensify the recession of space from very near to far. Being a true native of Haarlem, most of his church interiors represent either the St. Bavo, or the Nieuwe Kerk, of his hometown. 1. See W. Liedtke, Architectural Painting in Delft, Doornspijk 1982, pp. 74-5.
