Notes

A pencil note on the reverse indicates that this gouache records a composition by Gaspard Dughet. Although the handling is perfectly characteristic of Moucheron, the composition is not, so this note may well be justified, particularly as Moucheron made a series of ten prints after Dughet.υ1 This composition does not, however, correspond with any of these prints, or with any known painting by Dughet, so the theory, though plausible, remains unproven.

Numerous watercolors by Moucheron survive, but hardly any gouaches by him are known. The present work is, however, totally comparable in handling with two signed gouaches, formerly in the Van Pallandt collection.υ2
