Item Overview

Description

Irving B. Haynes
(1927-2005)
"Untitled #1115"
watercolor on paper
Signed and dated 1961 lower right. This piece was exhibited at the Newport Museum of Art in Newport, Rhode Island in 2009 and is sold with the accompanying exhibition catalog "Irving B. Haynes: Abstractions, 1960-2005." This work is featured on page 10 of the catalog.

Born in Waterville, Maine, Irving Haynes studied music, musical composition, and played a number of instruments as a youth. After a stint in the army during World War II, he attended Colby College but soon transferred to the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence where he completed programs in both painting and architecture, earning BFA and BS degrees.

Haynes worked for various Providence architecture firms, first as a draftsman, and moonlighted as a jazz musician at various clubs around Rhode Island. In 1968 he established the architectural firm of Haynes Associates, which distinguished itself with award-winning restoration of many important historic buildings in Rhode Island as well as in new design. In 1982 Haynes was elected Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. In 1973 he began teaching design at the Rhode Island School of Design where he continued until his death.

Haynes painted continuously throughout his architectural and teaching careers. Most of his imagery is abstract. He drew inspiration primarily from observing visual effects in nature, but also from an extensive study of art history (with particular attention to Cezanne, Klee and the cubists) as well as the science of vision. He exhibited regularly at the Providence Art Club and showed as well at the Painting Center in New York and the Virginia Lynch Gallery in Tiverton, Rhode Island. A retrospective exhibition of his work, with catalog, was presented in 2009 by the Newport Art Museum in Newport, Rhode Island. Selected work can be seen at www.irvingbhaynes.com.
