Dated Showa 11 (1936)
Kakejiku, in ink on paper, depicting three mice, parodying human activity during the harvest season, one holding a hagoita and two carrying tawara (straw bag filled with rice), with seal Hako; with double tomobako titled Nezumi-doshi no tawamure (Fun of the year of mouse), dated and signed by the artist Showa juichi-nen shinshun (the New Year of Showa 11 [1936]), Hako dai with seal Hako. 37.2cm x 48.2cm (14 5/8in x 19in). Born in Kyoto, after travelling abroad and painting Western scenes in a Japanese manner, Hako became interested in Buddhist painting. Later in his career, he copied the wall paintings in the main hall at the Horyu-ji.
