Description

Outstanding unsigned oil on canvas scene shows six babies, five in white gowns and one in yellow dress and wearing white bonnet. Wonderful expressions, each with different color hair. Housed in original gilt gesso decorated frame. Provenance: Descended directly from Louis Prang through family descent. IMPORTANT NOTE: This is the painting that was used in the book titled "Prang's Prize Babies How This Picture is Made" by L. Prang & Co. Boston. "An Outline of the Process of Chromolithography in General, Illustrated by Progressive Proofs of "The Prize Babies" a picture which, for its sentiment and its artistic merit has been most favorably received in America and in Europe. The book accompanies lot and is a fascinating look at how chromolithography is done and exceptionally important because this is the painting that it uses as an example.
