HEGEL), 1867 8vo (170 x 110mm.), first edition, one of 1,250 copies, original blue cloth lettered in gilt on upper cover and spine, publisher's device in blind on lower cover, borders in blind on covers, glazed white endpapers, gilt edges, some spotting and browning, ownership stamp to title-page, recased and rebacked preserving original spine, slightly rubbed at extremities, hinges strengthened, some soiling to endpapers

Notes

First edition of Ibsen's celebrated and ground-breaking dramatic work, very rare in the original binding. Copies of the first edition were issued in both cloth and paper wrappers.

Peer Gynt was first performed in Christiania (now Oslo) on 24 February 1876, with incidental music by the composer Edvard Grieg. It was published in a German translation in 1881, in English in 1892, and in French in 1896.
