Notre dessin est une étude préparatoire au Portrait du marquis Néri Maria Corsini, (conservé au Palais Corsini à Florence). Le tableau fut peint en 1710, lors du séjour parisien du prince, neveu du pape Clément XII, né en 1685, et créé cardinal en 1730. Le livre de raison du peintre indique pour l'année 1710 : " M. le marquis Corsiny, envoyé de Florence. Depuis cardinal, neveux du pape. Habilement représenté : 400 ". Rigaud fait sans doute référence à la gravure à l'eau-forte réalisée par Pietro Antonio Pazzi. Trois dessins de Rigaud sont décrits dans la vente du collectionneur Flury-Hérard : nous pouvons rapprocher notre portait du numéro 315 qui représente " un beau portrait d'homme au crayon noir relevé de blanc ". Cette étude pourrait correspondre à une famille ayant appartenu au Marquis de Chennevières, si l'on s'en tient à la description donnée dans L'Artiste: " Portrait d'homme debout et vu jusqu'au genoux : il est de face vers la gauche, sa main gauche appuyée sur une table, la main droite posée sur la hanche, le manteau retroussé sur l'épaule droite ; au deuxième plan à droite, une colonne sans draperie ; beaux traits aquilins, perruque flottante sur les épaules. Superbe dessin très fini, à la pierre noire, rehaussé de blanc, à l'estompe et au pinceau sur papier bleuâtre. Acheté chez Gasté de M.Siffre ". Elle est à nouveau décrite dans la vente Chennevières en 1898 et ses dimensions données sont semblables à celles de notre dessin (36 x 28 cm). Toutefois, le dessin ne porte pas son cachet.

The highest and final bidder is deemed to be the purchaser, and must provide his / her name and address. No lot will be transferred to the purchaser before it has been paid for in full.
