(Maryland/Ireland, 1830-1915), An African-American Gentleman, 1859, signed lower right "H. Newell 1859", oil on paper mounted on fiberboard, 11 x 8 in.; painted wood frame with gilt liner some chipping at edges, some lifting of paper, scattered retouch primarily at edges; frame resurfaced, abrasions Provenance: Perry Hopf, Kennebunk, Maine Newell arrived in America in 1852 and almost immediately could be found advertising as a portrait painter in Baltimore, Maryland. For a brief period during the Civil War, Newell returned to Ireland. After the war he eventually returned to Baltimore, heading the Art School of the Maryland Institute.
