Item Overview

Description

This detailed engraving of A Portrait of Madame de Pompadour's Dog Inés is by Jean-Baptiste Huet. The engraving was printed circa 1780 by Hemerick and after Huet.

Madame de Pompadour (1721-1764) was the chief mistress of King Louis XV, as well as his friend and advisor. She exerted both political and artistic influence in the court, planning construction projects for the king while also actively being patrons of the arts. Pompadour was also very fond of dogs, and papillons in particular. She always had a little dog accompanying her and often included them in her portraits. One of her most famous dogs was a beloved papillon named Inés, pictured here.

Born into a family and network of artists, the French painter and engraver Jean-Baptiste Huet became interested in art at an early age. He started out focusing on printmaking, working in various artists' studios to gain experience. He was accepted as an animal painter at the Académie Royale, began showing his work at the Paris Salon, and would become well-known for his decorative, Rococo style in painting rural scenes and animals.
